Missing In Action

It is time to hit that RESET button again for me as I have been away too long. I missed writing blog posts, sharing information, and it will be nice to make the time to write them again.

So where have I been – well that is simple, head-down in study mode. I am working obtaining my Juniper JNCIE-SEC certification since last year and have been studying like crazy – yet not enough to pass the lab. At this point I have taken the JNCIE-SEC lab three times, first two times I was ill-prepared and this past time I felt like I almost had it. So, back to study mode and will be focusing on that for some time yet. Will let you know more on that when I pass the darn thing – not giving up!

Home Lab Cooling Option

How many of us have a home network rack in a closet someplace and leave the door open (or just off) to help keep things cool? Has your home lab been tucked away under the stairs so you don’t need to hear it? Or is it in the open so it stays cool and the noise drives you (or your other half) nuts? Well, let me tell you about what I am using to keep my home rack cool in a closet. For me, I have a bunch of Ubiquiti devices (future post), Synology NAS, Cable Modem, UPS’, and some Intel NUC servers in my home rack. I also have a decent amount of lab Cisco and Juniper gear that I spin up when necessary ( I use an APC managed PDU ). Overall it is fairly quiet, but I still wanted to keep it out of the eyes of others and also to keep the kids from touching anything. What I found is that when I closed the door, the temperature in the closet would rocket up and I would start to get temperature alarms from devices. That forced me to keep the door open, not an optimal solution for when guests are over.

Ah, finally -my camera as arrived. I ordered my Seek Thermal Camera from Amazon for iPhone back in October 2014, and due to some issues between Apple and Seek over the Hardware Certification, the shipments had been delayed.

Apple iPad and T-Mobile SIM Swap

Ok I finally tried it – swapping in a T-Mobile SIM into an Apple iPad Air that was running a AT&T SIM for cellular data – and you know what, it works!

It was as easy as ording a Bring your own tablet T-Mobile Nano SIM at – http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/sim-card?cm_sp=tmo_landingpage-_-yorktown-_-prepaidSIM

I got the card in a few days, popped out the AT&T SIM and insterted the T-Mobile SIM and set the SIM up for the iPad.

Here are some quick screen shots after I swapped the nano sim. I used a paper clip to pop the old one you, worked well.

New Hosting Provider

Just wanted to put out a quick post. I have moved the site from my old hosting provider to Digital Ocean. I am still in the process of the migration, so some images may not be working. I am trying to ferret through all the posts to find and fix the missing images. Please be patient while I work on this.

I moved the site for two main reasons – first reason being that I left my employment at TorreyPoint / Fishnet Security and was hosted by one of their customers. The second reason is that Digital Ocean uses SSD for their servers and their prices are really good. They have plans that start at $5 month for a server with 512M and 20G SSD drive – that is perfect for a blog!

Missing in Posting

Ok, I will admit I have been missing in action for too long. Was starting to think of putting my face on that carton, but I will spare you that imagery. The holidays are a busy time for me with family and such, so that is part of it. The other part of it is that I left my employer, NTT, in December after a year of being there. It was my decision to leave, and I did it based on some internal factors that I would rather not mention. I enjoyed working there and with the team that I was on. There are some good people on that team that have a bright future! So, where did I end up? I took a position with Torrey Point – http://www.torreypoint.com/ – as a Network Engineer focusing in Post Sale deployments. Something that I feel I am well suited for, as well as looking forward to the challenges that will be presented. I have been with them since I left NTT in December, but have not had a chance to post anything here. One really great thing with Torrey Point, I will get more hands on time with some Juniper equipment! Love building my skills – and this is the perfect opportunity for me to do that. Now that that is out of the way, look forward to some more Junos workbook posts in the coming week. I did complete my JNCIA in December ’12 as well, and based on some of that study – I have made a few quick edits to the Junos workbook, and more around the J-Web interface post that I am working on. Financial Tools – Debt Reduction – Budgeting – Planning

Yeah, I am deviating again from the technology norm for a post. Every now and then I just feel that I need to share some of the tools that I have found that might be able to help others. In this post, I will be sharing some of the debt reduction and budget planning information I have found over time, as well as some other financial forms that come in handy.
First of all – I will admit I am a fan of Dave Ramsey, Gail Vaz-Oxlade, Suze Orman, and other financial gurus. Most of what each of them speak of come down to a single thing – common sense. Not much of what they say is new or amazing, it is just want Grandma and Grandpa (or great Grandma and Grandpa for some of you) use to do and say. Perhaps that is the problem, we have a generation growing up that only really knows plastic – they don’t know the value of cash and savings.
I am not here to talk on cause and effect, but to share information I have been able to gather over time.

AppleTV Unboxing and first thoughts

It arrived today – one day early – the AppleTV 3rd Gen. I jumped on ordering this as soon as I was able to, especially since I wanted to get another one for the bedroom (we already have the 2nd Gen in our family room). The 3rd Gen one will be hooked up on our primary TV in the family room, but I could not wait to see what the 1080P looked like, so I hooked it up.
But first the boring unboxing:
You can see the box in the top picture, here is a picture of… the back of the box! It has some information and such on it, pretty cool for a quick overview of what you can use this for.

When you look at the side of the box, you can see that is boasts 802.11n WiFi, HDMI, and 1080P graphics.
